Friday 01/29/16- Date Night!!

Ms Independence |
We had waited Since my Surgery on December 16th to go out on our date!! I had been on Restriction from everything I enjoy (No high kicks, no lifting over 10 pounds, no SEX and this was my celebration day!! No More Restriction!! I can RIDE!!! The weather was warm. The wind whipping the hairs that come loose from my helmet into my face. My husband and I rode along the road as though nothing bad could happen. I swayed my hips as I watched David merge into the lane to turn right. He had wanted to take me to the range, but I was STARVING. We have been riding for hours and I wanted FOOD, so we changed course. Funny how a simple decision can have so many rippling effects. Suddenly the world was crashing down. As David veered right, there was truck directly in front of me and coming at me fast, in reverse? Next thing I knew everything was slow motion and I knew I would hit as I was fishtailing in the back. I had tried to punch into the turn, to follow David and go around the truck, but I still fishtailed. When I then hit the brakes (The WRONG choice) Even though we were only going (maybe?) 30, My fishtail impacted sandwiching my left leg between the bumper of the truck in front of me and our very own Ms Independence breaking my lower leg completely in 4 places.
David got off his bike and ran over to me. I was pinned between my bike and the bed of the truck. I was pushing and pushing but I could not unwedge myself. I called to David to help me as I pushed and shoved against the truck. I was fighting to get released, pushing with all my might to release the leg I could not feel, except I thought it was crushed. I was pinned. David lifted the bumper of the truck off my leg and called to others to help me out from between the two vehicles. They hesitated. They did not want to move me so he told them to get his wife out from under the truck NOW. They grabbed under my arms and pulled both me and my bike until the wedge released me. I tilted slightly. A pool of blood ran from my face pudding in large drops in the earth beneath me, each drop making it's own little sand crater. I watched them land like slow motion rain drops into the dirt below and it was like watching a movie in slow motion and incredibly surreal. All my senses were heightened and as of yet I still felt no pain. Then I was flipped again now facing the sky and they told me not to move. Don't lift my head. Various faces would appear above me offering kind words with concerned eyes, looking at me, into me, searching for a hint of how was I REALLY doing... and I could hear David directing traffic and ensuring my safety. I heard the sirens. My rescuers told me these sounds were coming for me. Soon 5 paramedics were on the scene. They wanted to cut off my beautiful chaps. Though I still felt no pain, I I began to shake with shock. Through trembling lips, I said "No way! Use the zipper!" And they zipped them right off, cut my jeans off. Took off my lined heavy leather jacket and leather vest. Cut off two beautiful shirts, removed my head coverings, and commenced to bubble wrap me in what was left of my Victoria's Secret lingerie. They set my broken leg on the scene and pain shot through me like a hammer and I was reminded of just how injured I probably was. Then they bubble wrapped an air compressed splint and cinched the leg tight. Then, a plastic funnel around my neck, and finally another air compressed bubble wrapped body bag cinched tight to my body as they asked me if I suffered from claustrophobia. Leather and lace were my friend today. I was alive, a somewhat in tact and still had a sense of humor and heart of gratitude as they loaded me into the ambulance and headed toward Denton Regional.

Broken in 4 Places Below the Knee - But Because I was Wearing Heavy Chaps, you cannot tell. |
Now That's What I call a HOT MESS!!
Post surgery, this is what they use for a cast in times like this. it was amazing how they wrapped the leg in two strips of simple plaster of paris-ish stuff and put it against my leg and wrapped it up with gause and just regular wrapping.
That tooth is broken horizontally and also vertically front to back. Tha back piece is all wiggly. Yuck! The tooth fragments are in my lip and will later be removed.
